Being a photographer, you just never know what tomorrow will bring.  Every week are different themes, locations and people – it truly is magnificent.

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to be a part of a Hard Rock Pin-Up themed shoot in Orange, California.  Below are a just a small sampling of what I shot that day.

As always, please let me know what you think and keep us in mind if you have a need for a photographer in your future.

Cheers!

Swoooon

We were SO happy to be able to photograph the wedding of Summer and Rob yesterday at the Lake Arrowhead Resort.  Thankfully the unpredictable mountain weather held out for a beautiful ceremony on the lake between these two best friends.

One very important thing we learned about the happy couple:  There is only one thing they take more seriously than a good party… Fishing!  Here are just a few from their special day

Faux vs. Fresh: Find a Balance (Shh, no one will know)

If you can’t tell, do you think our guests could?

Our clever florist featured faux hydrangeas at the end of the pews for our church. As a site that is registered as a national historical landmark, it really didn’t warrant much decoration. This option (less than $2 each) saved us considerably. After all, there’s about 20+ pew rows, right?

What Does it Mean to be a Preferred Vendor?

In the interest of answering many of the questions I get, I thought it would be a great idea to start also blogging about the wedding industry.  There are so many unknowns and brides have questions – not to worry, I’m going to answer them the best I can!  Here is our first: It was originally so well blogged that I decided it would be easier for everyone to just re-post.

What Does it Mean to be a Preferred Vendor?

When a bride shops for her wedding vendors, she frequently depends on word of mouth referrals and other vendors’ “Preferred Vendor” list. This is usually a list of wedding vendors that a venue (and I’m going to use “venue” as the example while acknowledging a photographer, or wedding planner, or caterer could also have such a list) has listed on their website that pretty much says, “We recommend you try these folks.” A bride may look at this list and assume the venue is vouching for the quality and business practices of the listed vendors. This is not always true. It is in the venue’s best interest to only list vendors that are reputable and offer quality products and services to the venue’s clients, otherwise it looks bad on the venue. How does a vendor get on a “Preferred Vendor” list? In my experience, some places just charge a fee for the exposure. I could have been on the Preferred Vendor List of one venue in town just by writing them a $300 annual check to be on the list. A bride would have thought my name on the list meant the venue was recommending me because of my great food when the truth was they were recommending me because I paid them to. (I refused to be put on their list just for this reason.) Some places would have been happy to put me on their list if I just showed them a copy of my health department license and proof of liability insurance. Actually, every venue should ask for this documentation, regardless of whether I’m on their list or not, but in most cases, my name on their list merely meant “Yeah … she’s legal and we’ll let her in.” Some venues required that I do a “payback” to them based on the bookings at their venue (notice how I refrained from using the term “kickback”!). I had no problem with giving finders fees or referral credits when I actually received the business from the venue (and for the record, there was only one I encountered who operated this way), but I DID have a problem writing a mandatory check to a venue when the bride/groom found me on their own and the venue had nothing to do with it. Had I agreed up front to this venue’s terms, they would have been happy to make me a “Preferred Vendor”. In this case, my name NOT on their list just meant I wouldn’t play Kick(back) Ball with them. Before you think I’m just a big Negative Nelly, many venues select their Preferred Vendors based on performance and the relationship they’ve built with the other wedding vendors over a long period of time. As I mentioned, the venue’s reputation is also at stake if they refer a bride to a vendor is just doesn’t make the grade. Many “Preferred Vendor Lists” are helpful to couples who have no idea who to call and the venue has done a preliminary pre-screening for them. As you shop for your wedding vendors, ask the venue how a company gets on their Preferred Vendor list. Ask if the venue will personally vouch for their character, their quality and their service. A big assumption is that couples believe the “Preferred Vendor List” means they can only use those vendors. While a Preferred List is usually exclusive, it’s not always. Ask if the Preferred Vendor List is exclusive or if the bride/groom can select their own florist / photographer / caterer, etc. Sometimes there is an additional fee to bring in an outside vendor, but depending on the pricing, it could still be cheaper for the couple. .

Moral of the story = ASK!  If you are permitted to use outside vendors it is often in your best interest for quality and price!

As always, questions and comments are welcome

Cheers,

Katie

Not many things make me speechless.  Witty comments, snide remarks, funny looks – I take them all in stride with a smile.  A fellow photographer posted today about a letter she received which left me without words and in tears.   I am reminded everyday how fragile and delicate life is, and how important it is to photograph each and every moment possible.  I admit – I could do a better job at capturing images of my own family.

Next time you debate portraits – remember this letter:  (and grab a tissue)

July 2nd, 2011
Jeanine –
Today I am writing for a couple of reasons.  I have some quiet time at the moment and need to get a couple of things off my mind.  I will leave this for my husband to deliver to you when he is ready.
You photographed my wedding, you photographed my first pregnancy and my first baby.  I contacted you awhile back to photograph my 2nd child and family.  After getting prices and realizing I would want all of the pictures as we love your work – I decided against spending $500+ – which is what I normally spend for portraits and prints with you..  Please know it is not because I don’t value your amazing eye, or how much we love the experience.
That week that I decided to NOT do a session with you, this is how I spent some money.
On Sunday I called and cancelled our session.  Monday I went out and got my hair cut ($39+tip), and colored ($65), Thursday I had my nails done ($24), my family went out to dinner at a somewhat expensive restaurant for no particular reason costing us $79 + tip.  This was just 4 days since canceling our session, already totaling over $200 for un necessary things.  My nails only lasted about 2 weeks, my hair is gone, and seven weeks passed when I got the phone call from our doctor.  It was not something I expected and the cancer has spread very quickly.  I will be leaving my husband, my 6 year old girl and my now 2 year old – not by choice.  It is very hard for me to talk about it which is why I need to write you.
I watch your Facebook page and your posts about the value of a photo and if I could give back all of those things that I purchased this few weeks after I cancelled my session with you, knowing what I know now, and have that session, well… I would do it in a heartbeat.
Now my time is done and there are no more chances for me.  The next time someone cancels a session – my wish is that you forward this letter to them.  Time is fragile, it is gone before you know you had it.  If you charged $200 for one print it wouldn’t be enough for what it is actually worth.  I cringe to think that my priorities were a manicure over a memory to pass onto my babies and husband.
My love and thanks for what you have given us from past photos.  I am so sorry that I did not see it as more than paper until now.
Karen L.

Bridal Consultations

I don’t normally drink coffee.  What I should say is that I don’t drink regular pedestrian coffee.  My choice is Starbucks – Big ol’ Cafe Mocha with two pumps extra mocha, yes – I have decided long ago to drink my calories away.

It is a good thing that I really do love Starbucks as it’s where a majority of our bridal consultations take place.  Why you may ask?  Easy!  convenience for both potential clients and ourselves as well as comfort.  You see, it’s like a blind date – and how does someone make the process easy, convienent and comfortable?  STARBUCKS!

The 2012 wedding season is filling rapidly and we haven’t even gotten to the new year yet!  Way to go Brides and Grooms for planning ahead 🙂

If you need to discuss your special day, please do not hesitate to give us a call or email:
